An Introduction to NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

This is an interactive workshop, full of practical exercises, which will help you explore the basics of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Throughout the day we will look at the assumptions that working within the NLP framework makes; and discuss the opportunities and challenges these might bring. The NLP Model of Communication will provide us with a structure within which we can explore our communication and how we might adapt this (with integrity) to increase rapport, gain understanding and influence more effectively.

We will look at three concepts in particular:

  1. Representational Systems: Each of us accesses information in our minds, in different ways (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, etc). You will explore the different representational systems and, working with the group, learn to read how others might be thinking. This can be useful in terms of adapting communication, so you can work alongside the other person’s representational system rather than against it.
  2. Language: People will often delete, distort and generalise their experience. The Meta Models shows us how to gather information and challenge those responses, by challenging the distortion, generalisation and deletion in their language. We will also (briefly) look at the Milton Model, where distortions, deletions and generalisations are used purposefully to encourage people to go in search of what is being said or asked.
  3. Resourceful States: Anchoring is a natural process deliberately, to take more control over how you think and feel in the present, so you are in the driving seat of your thoughts and behaviour. This technique teaches you how to find yourself in a ‘resourceful state’ wherever you are.

 

At the end of this workshop, you will

  • Have a basic knowledge of the NLP framework and model of communication.
  • Use this to reframe situations/events so you can find different solutions, one of which will work.
  • Understand how you and others represent experience; and how that can be communicated through language and behaviour.
  • Use this knowledge to relate to people in their representational system, thereby increasing rapport and influence.
  • Detect and name meta model ‘violations’ and become skilled at following what you/another person is saying by recognising the thought patterns that show up in your/their language.
  • Be in charge of your attitude/emotions by using sub modalities, so you can bring about a resourceful state when you need it. (eg. Confidence, calm, etc)
  • Know how to anchor this resourceful state, so that you can access it immediately, at any time.
  • With your peers, find practical ways to incorporate what you have learnt into your working/personal life.
